Assessment Practice
Numeric Typing Test
Practise typing numeric data for pre-employment assessments in the same format employers use. This test scores your performance in keystrokes per hour (KPH) and accuracy percentage - the two metrics most commonly evaluated in pre-employment data entry screenings.
Use your number pad - main keyboard number row is not accepted

What Employers Look for in Numeric Typing Tests
Speed - measured in KPH
Most data entry roles require a minimum of 8,000 KPH. Finance and banking roles often require 10,000-12,000 KPH. The KPH threshold is specific to the numpad - number row typing does not count.
Accuracy - usually 98%+
Speed without accuracy fails most screenings. Employers typically require 98% accuracy as a minimum, and many systems automatically disqualify candidates below this threshold regardless of KPH.
Test duration
Most pre-employment numeric tests run for 3-5 minutes. Shorter tests are easier to inflate; longer tests give a more stable picture of real working speed. Practise at the length your employer uses.
Consistent performance
A single strong result is not reliable. Employers want candidates who consistently hit their targets - not those who peaked once. Regular timed practice builds this consistency.
How to Prepare for a Numeric Typing Assessment
Use your numpad, not the number row
Employers test numpad speed specifically. The number row is significantly slower for sustained numeric entry. If you don't have a numpad, practise on an external one before your assessment date.
Prioritise accuracy before speed
Slow down until your accuracy is consistently above 98%. Only then start pushing your speed up. Rushing while still making errors builds bad habits that are hard to undo under assessment pressure.
Don't look at your keys
Touch typing the numpad means keeping your index finger anchored on the 5 key (which has a raised nub). All other keys can be reached by feel from there. Looking down breaks your rhythm and costs time.
Practise at the target duration
If you know the assessment is 5 minutes, run 5-minute tests regularly. Your stamina and focus drop at different points in longer tests - you need to be familiar with maintaining speed to the end.
